The amount of plastic that we mindlessly use and throw away is staggering. The world produces 300 million tonnes of plastic, and every year about 10 million tonnes of that plastic winds up in our oceans and ultimately in the food chain. The European Commission is proposing EU-wide rules to ban single-use plastic products.
If the policy goes ahead, it will ban the production of single-use plastic products such as straws, drink stirrers, cutlery, plates, cotton buds, balloon sticks. The intention is not to ban these products, but to have them made from sustainable materials.
It’s a great initiative. There are environmentally friendly alternatives. It’s a matter of changing our habits. Would you like to see Australia commit to something similar?
